THE WIDRIG FAMILY OF BAD RAGAZ, SWITZERLAND

Only one Widrig came to England and he never intended to stay.

Johann Anton Widrig left Switzerland for London probably around 1890. His intention was to learn English before returning to work in the hotel trade. In London he met and married an English girl Kate Brown, a cook, who came from rural Hampshire.

Despite the relative proximity of Switzerland to the UK, there would probably have been no question of the couple moving to Switzerland, and Johann Anton never saw his homeland again. He did, however remain in touch with his family and it is known that his niece Anna Magdelena (Annie) visited London some time before the 2nd World War.

The family took up residence in London. There were three children Henry (b.1908) who died in hospital following a fall down a staircase, Robert (Bob) ( my father in law) and Josephine.

This family is the only known Widrig family in the whole of the UK and in that family only 4 individuals continue to bear the Widrig name. (5 if you count my wife Sally Thompson-Widrig who makes occasional use of her maiden in accordance with Swiss custom.)

Recent years have seen various Widrig 'reunions' as a result of researches into Family History. These have involved Don Widrig's family from Kentucky USA, Celeste Pritchard (also a Widrig descendant) from Texas, USA , Paul Widrig-Kugler and Hans-Jörg Widrig from Switzerland
