LANCASTER & DISTRICT

My earliest definite THOMPSON ancestor William Thompson came from Lancaster, where he married Hannah CROS(S)FIELD in 1821. His son Peter married Jane IRELAND (from the ARKHOLME basket making family of that name) in 1865. Their son Peter (jun) married Caroline CAMERON from nearby BEETHAM in Westmorland. Jane Ireland's mother was a Jane HOLME(S) from nearby BENTHAM (Yorks). Caroline CAMERON's mother was Sarah Ann VINCENT who was originally from GARSDON near MALMESBURY in Wiltshire and came to Lancashire in the 1870's with her STONEHAM kinsfolk who were also from Garsdon, Wilts. The Thompson tree shows one earlier possible generation.

The Thompson family was (unlike the Irelands) not very prolific, Peter (jun) being the only child who had a family. He and Jane (Ireland) had 8 children in total. Alice died in infancy ;William b.1867 emigrated to New York (see emigration page); John b.1870 disappears after the 1901 census which shows him to be married to Margaret Ann ( professional vocalist (music) - probably a music hall artiste? -and he seems to have been expunged from the family memory - why?; Edwin married Mary Josephine WILKINSON in 1907 and there appear to have been no children; Annie married Ernest Walter CAREY in 1897 (2 children) and moved to EASTLEIGH, Hants; Robert Arthur married Ann Agnes HODGSON in 1900 (4 children of which the last surviving was Mabel (unmarried) who died in Lancaster in 1956); Thomas Crosfield (twin of Peter) died in infancy; Peter moved to Northampton where he became a policeman and married Caroline Cameron (originally from Beetham).

Hannah Crosfield came from Poulton according to the 1851 census. She is not however among the Crosfield baptisms in the PR.

The Camerons originated from the Edinburgh district (see Scottish page)

The Vincents and Stonehams are described on the Wiltshire page
